Macro: Fostering an inclusive community
The design intent for the public residential housing is to revitalise, restore, and re-interpret. To revitalise and restore the vibrant community that once defined Joo Chiat, by analysing the qualities of Joo Chiat, both material and non-material, and re-interpreting these qualities into the 12 storey public residential housing, titled ‘Change’. It aims to re-enact activities as well as the atmosphere of Joo Chiat in the past transforming the lower floors of the housing block into an all-inclusive community centric space.
Micro: Carving an idealistic family unit
The idea of family and bonding sentiments are prerequisites of a multi-generational residence. The inspiration for the spatial design within each residential unit in 'Change' was through an understanding of the social and physical realm of how an individual or family lives. How do the spatial quality impacts one’s experience; for an individual living on his own and when residing with other individuals within a unit? A strategy was adopted to provide each unit type with a defined feature space catering to the social, emotional and functional needs of the elderly, individual and families.
‘Change’ integrates the excitement and vibrancy of the Joo Chiat community with the sentiments a family holds.
This project was presented at Archifest CityStudio 2015.
